I recently met an Irish traveller at a dorm I was staying at in Kerala. He was here on a self-discovery journey and as we were speaking about people, their talents, how short life is, and so on, he brought up a reference that I was surprised to hear.
I had a fairly westernised upbringing and outlook. He was speaking during the first few days about Zen, meditation, being one with everything, and the like. He played the Bhansuri, an Indian flute. He had learnt it during his three-month stay in Nepal. Therefore, he was the last person I thought I'd hear the name Yousuke Yukimatsu from.
Of course, it would be unfair not to indicate that I've had my fair share of unwise judgements in life, and I am really no better than any Bob at it. That this was one such case really poked a hole in the fabric.
Yousuke Yukimatsu is a Japanese DJ. He was a construction worker who was diagnosed with a brain tumour, underwent surgery, and then completely turned to DJing. He had this crazy Boiler Room set that has to be one of my favourite work jams (yes, I do that, please move on).
Now, there are two things here.
One, that he knew his calling was to become a DJ.
Second, that he realised the brevity of life through the brain tumour.
In many cases, we might already know about this concept of life and death and how we only get one bar of 100HP.
To me, writing this one thing is what blows my mind.
Even with the motivation of looming death, what is it that you'd rather do? You can take a moment to think.
Awesome, if you have an answer, you can end the read here, and I hope you've had a good time.
If you can't think of what you'd rather do, welcome to my world.
This could be because of two reasons. One, you are perfectly satisfied and happy doing what you're already doing. The second, you've never found out.
I'll branch out again on this second question. Why do you not know, and will you ever know?
He's here to find out. He might not find out.
I hope Lorcan gets what he's looking for,
and so unto myself.
